The CANDLE Project Turns One!

From June 1st to June 3rd, the CANDLE consortium came together in Lisbon and online for its 2026 Annual Meeting, marking the project’s first year and setting the direction for the next phase of work. Hosted by ISCTE (Portugal), the three-day programme brought together more than 60 participants from the consortium, pilot National Cancer Data Nodes (NCDNs), European Research Infrastructures, policy, research, healthcare organisations, patient-related actors, and European initiatives.

The meeting opened on June 1st with a warm-up day dedicated to the CANDLE Maturity Model and the Portuguese oncology ecosystem. Participants discussed how the model can support NCDN development, reflected on pilot experiences from Finland and Spain, and explored individual maturity domains in an interactive world café. In parallel, Portuguese stakeholders exchanged on the national oncology research and care landscape, common needs and links to European initiatives such as CANDLE, UNCAN-Connect, ECHoS and EU-CiP.

The main event June 2nd and 3rd focused on how CANDLE can help Member States develop flexible, EHDS-ready NCDNs that make cancer data more FAIR and usable for research. Sessions addressed the anchoring of NCDNs in EHDS developments, their value for Member States, real-life examples from Germany, Lithuania and Ireland, and the emerging CANDLE Resource Kit.

EVENTS

Second Cancer Persona Webinar

On March 6th, UNCAN-Connect, CANDLE, and EU-CiP: The EU Cancer Information Portal Project held a joint Persona Workshop with the EU cancer stakeholder community. This session, following the first persona workshop CANDLE held in November, aimed to build another four personas mapped to the functions of the National Cancer Data Nodes and the European Health Data Space context. 45 participants were in attendance, all engaging in meaningful conversations.

EU Cancer Mission conference: Understanding Cancer in the Digital Age: data, Innovation and Equity

The CANDLE project was proudly represented at the EU Cancer Mission Conference held in Nicosia, Cyprus, on April 27, 2026. The first panel session, highlighting the UNCAN.EU Network and the EHDS, was joined by Professor Gerrit Meijer of Health-RI, coordinator of the CANDLE Project.

OUTCOMES SPOTLIGHT

CANDLE Cancer Data Utilisation Survey

The Cancer Data Utilisation Survey is a European survey contributing to the co-creation of recommendations and best practices for cancer data (re)utilization - from data preparation and quality, to interoperability, governance, and secure cross-border reuse - and to help identify the core skills and key technologies needed to set up National Cancer Data Nodes (NCDNs). The survey was the cornerstone of the CANDLE interactive workshop.

NCDN Persona Series

We have launched the CANDLE Project Series on the National Cancer Data Node (NCDN) Personas.

Personas are fictional characters grounded in user research that help stakeholders understand and empathize with user needs, experiences, behaviours, and goals. This series explores the NCDN personas that were developed through our two persona workshops.
